Hair brushing without tears — choosing interactive baby dolls

Doll hair is rooted nylon, not fibre that repairs itself. Once it is torn it stays torn, so the whole trick is teaching a child to work from the ends.

The order that works

Spray with water, never with detangler meant for people.
Start at the tips, two inches at a time.
Hold the hair above where you are brushing so the roots take no pull.
Finish with a wide comb from the crown down.

When it is already matted

Warm water with a drop of fabric softener, fifteen minutes of soaking, then fingers before any comb. Nylon relaxes when it is warm. A matted head that looks finished is usually recoverable once, which is worth knowing before anyone reaches for scissors.

A brush, a clip and a tube of washable colour. Everything else a child invents. We have tried shipping heated tools and curling kits, and they end up in a drawer within a fortnight, while the brush gets used every day.
